A terrace house on a 22 by 75 ft lot is a common starting point. The family had outgrown it, but did not want to move: school, mosque and neighbours were all next door. A rear extension gave them a proper kitchen and two more bedrooms.
An extension is more difficult than a new house in one way: the old structure must be understood before the new one is designed. We started with a structural survey, designed a separate foundation for the extension and joined it to the old house with a movement joint.
The family stayed in the house throughout. Noisy work was done between 9 am and 5 pm, and we cleaned the site every evening.
